OCEANPORT, New Jersey, Oct 23 (Reuters) - Lawyer Ron, the runaway winner of the Grade I Whitney Handicap and the Woodward Stakes, was installed as the 5-2 early favourite on Tuesday for the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic.
Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense, who drew post two for the showcase race at Monmouth Park on Saturday, was made the joint second favourite at 3-1, along with Curlin, the winner of the Preakness.
Any Given Saturday, who defeated Curlin and Derby runner-up Hard Spun in this year's Haskell Invitational, was tabbed at 4-1 while European hope George Washington, the winner of four Group I races, was dismissed at 20-1.
Hard Spun (8-1), Tiago (12-1), Diamond Stripes (15-1), and Awesome Gem (30-1) complete the field of nine.
"I'd like to switch with Larry Jones (trainer of Hard Spun) and have the eight," said Street Sense trainer Carl Nafzger. "That's a great spot for him.
"The two just means you have to run a little earlier to get position."
Preakness winner Curlin will break from the four post.
"We're very fortunate to draw the four in a nine-horse field going a mile and a quarter," said trainer Steve Asmussen. "I definitely feel very good about the spot,".
Excellent Art, a Group I winner at Ascot earlier in the season, was made the 3-1 favourite in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Mile.
However, the three-year-old son of Pivotal drew poorly pulling post 13 in the field of 14.
Monmouth Park's turf course has a short run into the clubhouse turn and Excellent Art may have trouble securing a comfortable position going into it.
Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Dylan Thomas impressed the oddsmakers, who made the Irish bay the biggest favourite on the card at 7-5 for the $3 million Breeders' Cup Turf.
Dylan Thomas will start from the seventh post in the eight-horse field that includes two past winners of the event in Better Talk Now (2004) and Red Rocks (2006).
The first edition of the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf to be run on Friday drew a field of twelve.
