Free Press columnist Mitch Albom gets the full hour of the nationally syndicated "Dr. Phil" show today (7 p.m., WWJ-TV, Channel 62) to reflect on the 10th anniversary of his book "Tuesdays with Morrie," Albom's tribute to his dying professor, Morrie Schwartz.

The book, which began as a small-scope tribute to help pay Schwartz's medical bills, has become the biggest-selling memoir of all time, with 14 million copies in print worldwide.

How can you top that? Well, Albom is releasing a 10th-anniversary edition with an added chapter on Schwartz and the things the publication of the book has inspired.

Albom and Dr. Phil McGraw will discuss the book; Schwartz's sons, Rob and Jonathan, will also be featured.

'Escanaba' to close early

So long, yah? Jeff Daniels' comedy "Escanaba in Love" is scheduled to close after its evening performance Nov. 11 at Detroit's Gem Theatre. The play, which opened Sept. 11, had been scheduled to run through Dec. 31. "The audiences are definitely loving the show," Gem publicist Scott Myers said, but advance ticket sales are disappointing. "It was time to close."

The silver lining for the Gem is that "Forbidden Christmas," originally scheduled for the smaller Century Theatre in the same building, will have its entire run, Nov. 13-Dec. 31, at the Gem. Five or six performances of "Forbidden Christmas" had already sold out at the Century, Myers said.

Patrons who have tickets for "Escanaba" after Nov. 11 have three options: exchange them for any pre-Nov. 11 performance of "Escanaba," exchange them for performances of "Forbidden Christmas" or get refunds where they bought the tickets.

Tuesdays with Morrie is a bestselling non-fiction book by American writer Mitch Albom, published in 1997 (ISBN 0-385-48451-8). The story was later adapted by Mick Jackson into a television movie on 5 December 1999, which starred Hank Azaria as Mitch and Jack Lemmon (in his final role) as Morrie.

It is the true story of Brandeis University sociology professor, Morrie Schwartz and his relationship with student Mitch Albom. Both the film and the book chronicle the lessons about life that Mitch learns from his professor, who is dying from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

After five years in hardcover, it was released as a trade paperback in October 2002. It was re-released as a mass-market paperback by Anchor Books in January 2006. According to this edition, 11 million copies of Tuesdays with Morrie are in print worldwide.
