Adrian Peterson rushed for 296 yards and three touchdowns and the Vikings offense collected 528 yards while the defense limited the Chargers to just 229 yards in the game as Minnesota topped San Diego 35-17 on Sunday.
Minnesota improved to 3-5 on the year while San Diego fell to 4-4.
The Chargers grabbed a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when LaDainian Tomlinson scored from a yard out but Peterson countered for the Vikings with a 1-yard touchdown of his own.
San Diego then took advantage of a missed field goal to score the longest touchdown in the history of the NFL. Ryan Longwell lined-up for a 57-yarder at the end of the first half but when it fell short Antonio Cromartie caught it and returned it 109-yards for a touchdown and a 14-7 lead.
After gaining just 43-yards and a touchdown in the first half Peterson began his assault on the single game record with a 64-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter to tie the score.
Minnesota was able to grab the lead for the first time late in the third when Brooks Bollinger hit Sidney Rice on a 40-yard touchdown pass. San Diego pulled to within four early in the fourth quarter but Peterson struck again, this time on a 46-yard touchdown spurt. The Vikings tacked on another touchdown late in the game when Chester Taylor ran it in from 2-yards out to push the score to 35-17.
