Verizon Wireless plans to challenge Apple's iPhone by releasing touch- screen devices that browse the Web and play music.

The phones, from LG and Samsung, will go on sale within a few weeks, Verizon said Wednesday. The devices will join the BlackBerry Pearl in anchoring Verizon's product lineup this holiday season.

Verizon seeks to match the popularity of the iPhone, which reached sales of 1 million units in the first 74 days after it debuted June 29. AT&T, Verizon's larger rival, is the exclusive provider of wireless service for the iPhone. The device has a 3.5-inch touch screen and a built-in iPod music player.

Verizon is countering with LG's Voyager, which has a large touch screen. Unlike Apple's device, the Voyager has a mechanical keyboard as well. The company also will offer a touch-controlled phone from LG called Venus and a Samsung handset called Juke, both of which play music

Obviously, the new handset is available to Verizon subscribers in the U.S., but what about Canadians? I haven't been able to find out which, if any, of our wireless carriers will be offering the Voyager. Does anyone know?

Since the rumor is that Rogers will be the only Canadian carrier offering the rival iPhone, one would think the Voyager would end up at Bell, Telus and/or Fido. But, as this article points out, Canada has such high wireless pricing, we may never generate a very high demand for fancy media phones.
Today Verizon Wireless showed off the LG Voyager, a followup to the popular LG enV. The LG Voyager features a large touchscreen on the front with haptic feedback, giving users a small vibration when they touch a button. This messaging-centric phone flips open like a laptop to reveal a QWERTY keyboard. The LG Voyager is exclusive to Verizon Wireless and features support for its high-speed EV-DO 3G network. The Voyager also includes a full HTML web browser, as well as V CAST Music and Video and V CAST Mobile TV. The music player on the LG Voyager supports .MP3, .WMA, and unprotected .AAC music files.

The LG Voyager also features a 2.0 megapixel camera with video capture, as well as a microSD card slot, with support for capacities up to 8GB. The LG Voyager will be in stores by the end of November 2007, pricing has not yet been announced.
