Wildfires pushed by powerful winds continued to rage Monday across Southern California, forcing hundreds of thousands of people from their homes and burning more than 100,000 acres.
The fires forced closures of interstate highways and other roadways, as well as schools and businesses throughout the region. Dozens of homes were destroyed or damaged.
Among the hardest hit areas was San Diego County, where some 250,000 people were told to evacuate.
At least a dozen fires were reported throughout Southern California. One of the newest blazes broke out early Monday in the Lake Arrowhead area in San Bernardino County. The fire in the heavily wooded resort community quickly spread to 300 acres. Mandatory evacuations were ordered throughout the area. More than 100 homes were destroyed, according to reports.
Another wildfire was reported Monday afternoon burning west of Interstate 5 near Valencia, south of the Magic Mountain tourist attraction.
The fires were being pushed by gusty winds and fueled by dry brush. Hot temperatures and strong winds were forecast through at least Tuesday. Forecasters said wind gusts could hit up to 100 mph in some areas.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency in seven counties: Los Angeles, San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara, Orange and Ventura. Schwarzenegger toured some of the fire areas on Monday.
In San Diego County, evacuation orders were issued throughout the region as the 20,000-acre Harris Fire southeast of San Diego near the Mexican border and the 18,000-acre Witch fire in the northern part of the county burned out of control. A third blaze, dubbed the Guejito fire, was burning near Rancho Bernardo and was spreading into other communities.
Among areas affected were Ramona, San Marcos, Escondido, Poway, Fallbrook and Rancho Bernardo.
Evacuations included nearly 200 people from the Pomerado Hospital and an adjacent nursing home in Poway. Officials said the facilities were not immediately threatened but that the evacuations were a precautionary measure.
Qualcomm Stadium and the Del Mar Fairgrounds were pressed into service as evacuation centers, along with other smaller facilities.
One person died in the Harris fire and 17 others were injured, including four firefighters. Numerous structures were reported destroyed.
To the north in Los Angeles County, the Canyon Country fire had consumed some 27,500 acres and had destroyed at least 25 homes. Fire officials said they were facing "very erratic fire behavior."
They said the blaze, which was threatening thousands of homes, was about 20 percent contained. At least four people were injured, including one firefighter.
In Malibu, some 1,500 people remained evacuated from the upscale community. The fire had burned some 2,400 acres and was 10 percent contained. As many as 25 structures were reported destroyed, including the Malibu Presbyterian Church and the landmark Castle Kashan, a hillside home.
Two members of the Presbyterian Disaster Response national response team were dispatched to the area to provide spiritual and emotional support to the Pacific Presbytery and church staff. PDA said it was also making funds available to assist the Malibu congregation to provide a humanitarian response to the community.
Officials in Orange County, meantime, said a 10,000-acre blaze near Irvine that prompted some mandatory evacuations was arson. No homes were reported damaged or destroyed.
Evacuations were also ordered in the Ventura County towns of Piru and Fillmore due to the Ranch fire burning near Castaic. The fire has grown to nearly 30,000 acres and was about 10 percent contained.

[edit] History
The efforts in the late 1980s to 'land' the Cal State University campus (originally proposed as a North San Diego County satellite campus for San Diego State University) followed an area master-planning effort involving properties under contract for ownership to be developed as the Rancho Coronado project. The properties involved much of the area south of California State Route 78, and north of the Coronado Hills area, that had recently annexed into the City, and were proposed to be developed with a mix of residential and commercial uses. This came at the same time as City staff were participating in early inter-agency discussions regarding conversion of the existing Santa Fe Railroad line to commuter light rail service, leading to discussions of an overlap of interest in providing direct light rail service to the college campus grounds. The area master plan: "The Heart of the City" also included other planned transportation improvements to support the redevelopment of the City core area and a long-planned on-again/off-again construction of the [now-current] City Hall campus north of Highway 78.
In 1989, Cal State University San Marcos opened. This University has brought in an influx of young students, as well as academics of every race, religion, ethnicity, and creed. Cal State San Marcos is a rapidly growing, modern campus of new buildings, the latest computer technology, cutting-edge science labs, and has created a sense of excitement about the future of San Marcos. With the University there has been a growth, upscale developments, and influx of large retailers such as Home Depot, Lowes, Fry's Electronics, Best Buy, Costco, Economy Restaurant Equipment, and Walmart.
