Author JK Rowling has revealed a secret about one of the main characters in her Harry Potter books: the wizard Dumbledore is gay.

The best-selling British author made the confession at Carnegie Hall in New York when a young fan asked her if the headmaster of the fictional Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy ever fell in love.

"My truthful answer to you... I always thought of Dumbledore as gay," Rowling said.

Her comments were posted on the Potter fan website TheLeakyCauldron.org.

She said Professor Dumbledore had fallen in love with the wizard Gellert Grindelwald, but was crestfallen as Grindelwald turned his talents to the dark arts.

Dumbledore was "drawn to this brilliant person, and horribly, terribly let down by him," she said.

During a script reading for the sixth Harry Potter film, the author corrected a reference to Dumbledore waxing nostalgic about a female flame, she said.

"I had to write a little note in the margin and slide it along to the scriptwriter, 'Dumbledore's gay!'" Rowling said.

Her revelations about Dumbledore drew a "prolonged ovation", according to the fan website.

"If I'd known it would make you so happy, I would have announced it years ago!" she told her fans.

In the Potter films, Dumbledore was played by the late Richard Harris, and then by Michael Gambon.

Rowling, 42, has become a billionaire from the Potter phenomenon, with the books translated into 64 languages.

The first in the boy wizard series, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, was published in 1997 and the final and seventh novel, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, broke records after going on sale in July.

As for telling her admiring readers about the sexual preference of Professor Dumbledore, she said: "I had to give you something to talk about for the next 10 years ... Just imagine the fan fiction now."
Well, it's been revealed by J.K. Rowling that one of her characters was gay. Yes, Dumbledore was gay.

I never once thought he was gay, and I still don't. He and McGonnigal did have a thing for each other. J. K. Rowling is wrong...even if she is the author.

Oh, who cares? The whole bloody lot of them were gay as far as I'm concerned. All those hours of movies and not a single car chase, shootout or kung fu fight.

1.He was really close with a lot of his male students...Sirrus Black...Harry...Hagrid.... did he ever even talk to Hermione or a female student ever?

JK Rowling, author of the bestselling series, outed the character on Friday at Carnegie Hall, in New York.

Taking questions on a promotional tour for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the final book,

she was asked if Dumbledore, played in the latest Potter film by Sir Michael Gambon, had found "true love".

To gasps, she replied: "Dumbledore is gay."

According to Rowling, the head of Hogwarts, the academy that trained Harry in magic, was smitten by Gellert Grindelwald, a rival whom he defeated in a battle between good and evil wizards in the final book.

"Falling in love can blind us," she said, explaining that Dumbledore had been let down and his love for Grindelwald was his "great tragedy".

Rowling also disclosed that she had had to intervene to change the script during the making of the sixth film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, when she noticed a reference to a girl who was once of interest to Dumbledore.

She corrected the passage by scrawling: "Dumbledore is gay," over it.

Fan sites have long speculated about Dumbledore's sexuality, though gay-rights campaigners said they were disappointed Rowling had waited so long to reveal a homosexual character.

"It is great that JK Rowling wants to make her books inclusive of gay people," said Peter Tatchell, the gay-rights activist. "My disappointment is that she did not make it more explicit. Maybe she feared a hostile reaction."
The New York City's Carnegie Hall not only that houses high-class events, but also is the premises for unexpected confessions. The splendorous concert hall was opened to 2,000 kids and parents that won the spectacular chance to meet J.K. Rowling, the creator of Harry Potter and his magic world.

The fans were allowed to ask questions to the famous writer, besides from receiving autographs on their own copies of the most recent part of the saga, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Some curiosity though brought the renowned writer in the difficult position of talking about the sexual orientation of one of her wise characters of the book.

Asked by one child about the love life of Dumbledore, Rowling answered that the wise Hogwarts headmaster and mentor to Harry was actually gay and. She confessed that she had always considered him to be gay. "I always saw Dumbledore as gay. Dumbledore fell in love with Grindelwald.... Don't forget, falling in love can blind us. [He] was very drawn to this brilliant person. This was Dumbledore's tragedy," she explained.

Her response drew applause and screams from the whole audience, and even though Rowling tried to joke later saying "Oh my God, the fan fiction now!", she augmented the Harry Potter craze and developed the delirium the fantastic universe both books and movies create.

Rowling revealed that while reading the script for the sixth movie to be launched, Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince, she observed a reference to the character played by Sir Michael Gambon, Dumbledore that suggested he was thinking about a girl he used to like. Director David Yates was rapidly noted that her character was in fact gay and he had to cut that part.

Her confession drew admiration from the public, that now considers the characters closer to ordinary human beings and probably sales � that couldn't be anything but outstanding � will boost considerably even more.
