david hans schmidt

The man that pleaded guilty in a plot to extort $1 million from actor Tom Cruise using stolen wedding photos was found dead on Friday. The 47-year-old Schmidt was found in a shower stall at a North 21st street condominium in Phoenix, AZ. "He hung himself, and the shower stall was so small, he had to squat to get the job done," a source familiar with the situation told the National Enquirer.

David Hans Schmidt Commits Suicide: Tom Cruise Extortionist Dead

According to the Arizona republic, police found David Hans Schmidt dead around 3 p.m. on the 4300 block of N. 21st Street.Schmidt was on house arrest and had not checked in, Lt. Anthony Lopez said. Authorities went to the home when they noticed a tracker placed on him had not moved.

According to the Enquirer, Schmidt was facing up to two years in prison. He was contacted by Marc Lewis Gittleman, 33, who had obtained the wedding photos after recovering them from a damaged computer hard drive brought in to his place of employment for repair by a photographer. Schmidt emailed Cruise with samples of the photos, and asked for more than $1 million to keep them off the market.

Schmidt had brokered some of Hollywood's most infamous deals in recent years, including the Dustin Diamond (Screech on "Saved By the Bell") sex tape, Tonya Harding honeymoon sex tape, Paula Jones nude photos, a Colin Farrel sex tape, compromising photos of Jamie Foxx and other top-shelf scandals.
An Arizona man who was arrested last month for trying to extort a cool million from Tom Cruise has agreed to enter a plea agreement in his case. David Hans Schmidt, the 47-year-old who snapped pictures of Cruise's wedding to Katie Holmes decided to take the plea bargain rather than face trial.

In court documents obtained by Extra, David Hans Schmidt, "gives up the right to indictment by a grand jury and agrees to plead guilty to a single-count." That means Schmidt will plead guilty to the charge of transmitting threatening communications with the intent to extort, a crime which is punishable by up to two years in prison, as well as supervised released and a fine.

The FBI first arrested Schmidt in July, after he had attempted to sell Tom Cruise a substantial collection of private photographs from Cruise's 2006 wedding to Kate Holmes, which took place in Italy. According to People, Cruise's lawyer at the time, Bert Fields, said that the pictures had been stolen and that David Hans Schmidt had already attempted to contact Cruise's reps about the images.

According to Extra, the legal papers claims that Schmidt met with Cruise's reps, at which time he said that, "It would not look good for anyone if the photographs become public." Schmidt went back for another meeting the following month, proclaiming that he would "hunt down to hell and back anyone who crossed him."

According to the Smoking Gun, David Hans Schmidt has a history of trying to sell celerity photos. Schmidt has tried to sell extremely revealing photographs of Jamie Foxx and U.S. solider Jessica Lynch, among other images.
The 2007 state cross-country running championships today at Palmer High could look much like 2006.
